All to play for in final round of Veterans T20 League

It’s all to play for as we enter the final round of pool games in the 2021/22 Evergreen Lifestyle Western Province Veterans T20 League.

We’ve had six rounds of T20 cricket and it couldn’t be tighter, with Claremont and Fish Hoek topping Group A with 23 points apiece, while newcomers Victoria are one point adrift on 22 points. Claremont hold first place by virtue of their 2.44 run-rate, which is comfortably better than Fish Hoek’s 0.94. Primrose, Cape Town Cricket Club, St Augustine’s and Hanover Park complete the Group.

It’s the usual suspects in Group B, where Montrose (22) lead Rondebosch by one point, while United CC (18) and rookies the Northern Knights (17) are fighting hard to stay in contention.

With five points on offer for a win (six if you get a bonus point) and just the top side in each group qualifying for the Final at Newlands Cricket Stadium later this month, it means defending champions Pinelands, Green Point and Western Province Cricket Club are effectively out of the running.

Round 7 takes place on 9 February with Claremont taking on St Augustines at Elfindale, Fish Hoek will be playing Primrose at the Rosmead Oval, and Victoria will be hosting Cape Town Cricket Club at Chukker Road. Fish Hoek will have to improve their net run-rate if they want to finish top of the group.

Leaders in Group B, Montrose will have a tough away encounter against a strong Green Point team. With Rondebosch playing a friendly match against Hanover Park, they need to be wary of United and Northern Knights, who face Pinelands and WPCC respectively.

The winners of each group square off at Newlands on February 27, with the winner of that representing the region at the inaugural VCASA Club Champs in East London from 24-27 March.
