Former Springbok fullback, Russell Bennett and Border stalwart, Andrew Emslie have been added to the Proteas Over-50s World Cup Squad for the upcoming IMC Over-50s Cricket World Cup in Colombo, Sri Lanka next month.

Bennett, manager of the Proteas Veterans Over-40s team, which won the IMC Over-40s Cricket World Cup in Cape Town in February 2024 and captain of the South Africa Over-50s “A” team, replaces Lefty Ngece who has withdrawn due to personal reasons. Ngece, played in the disrupted 2020 Over-50s World Cup and the 2023 World Cup, both held in Cape Town.

Emslie, who represented the South African “A” team at the Africa Cup in Namibia in November last year, replaces Faldie Abderouf from Western Province, who has withdrawn due to a recurring ankle injury. Emslie scored a century in the last game of the Africa Cup and narrowly missed out on selection for the original Proteas Veterans World Cup squad.

The team will leave for the World Cup on Thursday, 06 February.  The South African team has been drawn in a strong pool with the West Indies, Australia, Wales, India, Pakistan and Canada. Other teams include England, UAE, USA, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Namibia and hosts, Sri Lanka. All 56 matches will be live streamed.

The Cup Final will be held at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, 23 February 2025.
