Four months later, Sri Lankans return home

Two Sri Lankans cricketers who were stranded in South Africa for four months have finally returned to their homeland.

Suranjith Dharmesena and Mahes de Zoysa were members of the Sri Lanka team which participated in the Over-50s Cricket World Cup in March.

The tournament was into its third round when it was called off as COVID-19 became a reality to the rest of the world, but while the rest of their teammates were able to return home, the duo were unable to get back into Colombo, which had already been closed down.

Now, more than 120 days later, they have been reunited with their family and friends.

“We arrived via Doha, Qatar on Sunday morning and are currently on a strict quarantine under the army supervised hotel in Negombo,” assistant manager De Zoysa told Daily Mirror (Sri Lanka).

He also thanked the Veterans Cricket Association of South Africa for their help during the time, saying: “We were well looked after by VCASA. They supported us a lot.”
