Pinelands CC claim inaugural Cape Veterans T20 League title
Pinelands Cricket Club were crowned the inaugural Evergreen Lifestyle Cape Veterans T20 League champions on Wednesday, despite a six-wicket defeat to Fish Hoek.
Pinelands had won the toss and decided to bat first, setting a very competitive 161/5 thanks to an unbeaten 55 from Paul Penzhorn.
But Fish Hoek reached the total with relative ease, thanks largely to an unbeaten 50 from former Proteas batsman Louis Koen, and captain Brandon Miller’s 46 from just 40 balls.
Still, Pinelands had been consistent enough throughout the season to claim the inaugural title, having won five of their seven matches.
“We feel mighty proud and privileged to be the first winners of the Evergreen Lifestyle Cape Veterans T20 League,” says Barney de Klerk, who has been at Pinelands CC for 40 years as a player, selector, manager, coach and scorer.
“The competition was very tough, with ex-Proteas players like Alan Dawson, Louis Koen, Steve Palframan and the like making life very hard for us.
“Our standout bowler was Paul Penzhorn, whose best figures was an incredible 4/9, while Derrin Bassage was our top batsman with an amazing average of 130. And no doubt the highlight of our season was chasing 22 runs off the last over against Montrose and Dave Boyse scoring 36 off only 14 balls.
“All in all, the first season was an incredible experience; one which was played the way cricket should always be played and with all the renewed friendships of yesteryear. We are already looking forward to next season!”
